Fearing that Astyanax would try to avenge his father if he were allowed to grow up, the Greeks violently murdered the boy. Together they had a son named Astyanax.įollowing Hector’s death and the defeat of the Trojans by the Greeks, Andromache was taken captive and enslaved. According to this tradition, Apollo had had an affair with Priam’s wife Hecuba, and Hector was the result of this union. His sisters included Cassandra, a prophet whose curse was that no one would believe her predictions.Īn alternative tradition, however, claimed that Hector’s real father was not Priam but the god Apollo. His younger brothers included Paris-who sparked the Trojan War by carrying off Helen-as well as the warrior Deiphobus and the prophet Helenus. As their firstborn son, Hector was heir to the Trojan throne. In most accounts, Hector’s parents were said to be Priam and Hecuba, the king and queen of Troy. ![]() With Hector dead, Troy had lost its greatest protector. The two heroes fought before the walls of Troy, and Hector ultimately fell to Achilles. When Achilles, the greatest of the Greek heroes, refused to fight because of a quarrel with the Greek commander Agamemnon, Hector nearly managed to drive the Greeks from Troy once and for all.īut when Hector killed Achilles’ best friend Patroclus in battle, Achilles turned the full force of his anger on Hector. During the Trojan War, he led the Trojan forces against the invading Greeks for nearly ten years. Hector was a great warrior, much admired not only for his military skill and bravery but also for his nobility and sense of duty. He married the princess Andromache, with whom he had a son named Astyanax. These officials were the powerful warriors with mounted armours. They were known as hoplites because of the shield that they used to protect them. These officers were armed as spearmen and they were required to fight in a phalanx formation. Hoplite (Foot Soldier)Ī hoplite was the name given to the soldiers who were appointed in the ancient Greek’s city states. These officers acted as the captains in the military and their insignia represented three silver stars. Captain (Lokhagos)Ī Lokhagos was the name given to the official who was appointed as the leader of a lochos. These were responsible for handling their battalions during military operations. Battalion leader (Tagmatarkhis)Ī Tagmatarkhis was the commander of a Tagma (battalion). These officers were responsible for commanding the operations of a regiment. This rank was assigned to the leader of the regiment which at Greek time was known as Syntagma. These were the officials who were responsible for strategizing and commanding the operations in a phylai. This rank was assigned to the brigadier of the military. ![]()
